Great River Road Ride 2011
Ride Reports
Written by Jim
Tuesday, 11 October 2011

According to the event web site, the Great River Road Ride is one of the top 10 centuries in the U.S.  I believe it.  It is a beautiful ride on lightly traveled roads, most in very good condition, with plenty of long climbs and descents.

The event has several ride options from 35 – 112 miles.  There are cue sheets and the course is well marked.  Steve Power and I tackled the 112 mile option, the 170km Timed Populaire.  You start in Westfield MA and the route takes you along the Westfield River to Savoy and back along the Middle and West Branches of the Westfield River.

Six Gaps Fall 2011
Well... one hearty soul signed on to join me for a gap ride - Steve Power.  He last did six gaps with my brother and me in 2007.   This trip report is not a blow by blow. (I could not get the photo's to load, but I will try again later)  It is a handful of pictures from lesser known parts of the ride.  I hope it will stir up stronger interest for the future as it would be fun to tackle a 4-gap or 6-gap ride with a group of 6 or so riders.  There are plenty of comprehensive trip reports and pictures, including one from our 2007 assault, at http://www.northeastcycling.com/six_gaps.html .

Bonnie's Bike Race
Ride Reports
Written by Bob Perry
Monday, 20 June 2011

This is an e-mail I recieved from Bonnie Losick about her race up Whiteface MTN in New York. I have done this one myself and can attest to the difficulty.

I got up Whiteface Mtn. in Wilmington, NY (just north of Lake Placid) – all 3,565 vertical feet of it in 8 damn miles yesterday! It was absolutely relentless – no breaks, no downhill or even any flat areas. Great sunny weather though, but it was a long, long uphill slog. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to finish, especially when I passed tempting picnic tables at gorgeous, scenic overlooks where I had all I could do to keep cranking over the pedals and not take a break. I was the oldest woman and the only one in my age group. Thus I came in first place (and last again) with a time of 1:31:01. Even being that slow I beat a number of people in both women’s and men’s age groups (the ones at the bottom of their age groups). Oh well. I’m not fast, but I did do it. Hooray. It may be my last, except for Mt. Greylock in the fall. Tomorrow is the annual ice cream social bike ride – I think that’s more my speed.
Love to you all,
Bonnie

Wendell Whips Bob...Again!!!
Ride Reports

It was a perfect day for a ride; sunny, warm and with a slight wind. I had planned a trip up to Wendell and although I am not in the best shape ever I felt I could do OK if the pace wasn’t too fast. As ride time approached I got my gear ready and was able to get the group going right on schedule at 6:00. We had a large group of riders that included a faster crew led by Keith and Eddie and my group which included the Favreau twins, Silko, Curt, Sir James and several other riders.

I had not planned a ride for Thursday evening because there was a good chance for stormy weather. About noon I got a call from Dusty stating that he was interested in doing a ride in spite of the weather. Long story short….there were 8 or so riders who left the shop at 6:00 to head for Leverett. They got almost back to the shop before the skies opened up and drenched the entire lot. All the riders returned safely but soaked to the bone.

The Three Amigo's Ride
Ride Reports

It was a beautiful spring day for our first “Cursed Ride” of the year. The temps were in the lower 70’s and we had a brisk south wind when the riders started to arrive at the shop. I had originally planned on doing a ride to Conway via Whatley but had to scrap that plan when I got a post from Bob Welsh telling me that the bridge on Haydenville Road is out. That meant that we would have had to use the dirt section of Conway Road which is not in all that great condition yet. We ended up with 11 riders when we wheeled out of the parking lot at 6:00 to head up Bernardston Road.
