Road Ride Information for 2008 Riding Season: Yes, boys and girls it is time to dust off the bikes and get ready for another season of fun. I would ask you all to read the rest of this section just as a reminder of how we like to do things. All of our rides are weather dependant and we usually do not ride in bad weather (snow, ice, thunderstorms, extremely high winds etc.). I will try to keep you informed in this space if there is a change for the ride.

A Gut Wrenching Ride in Wendell 5-14

Bug Bob-sm.jpg

I have not done a mountain bike ride in over two months due to a busy schedule at the shop and a generally crappy winter riding season. That was to change with my off-road debut at Wendell tonight. Since my fitness level has not been the best I volunteered to ride with the slower paced group tonight. When I arrived at the ranger station there was a large group waiting for me. After getting myself ready I wandered over to Liam to set a route for the two groups.

We could not have asked for better weather for tonight’s ride. It was 70 degrees and sunny with a brisk breeze blowing from the northeast. There were 25 riders in total for tonight with 18 of them going out on the longer ride. We left the shop at 6:00 with me in the lead on our run to Adams Road. I stayed at the front until we got to the animal shelter where I pulled off to head to the back of the line. As expected, the group stayed together until we got onto the hill on Adams Road. The speed was a steady 18 mph at the bottom and slowed to 15 mph as we reached midway up the hill. This was too much for me and I along with Jamie, Christine Parham, Chris Dodson, and Silko slowed up a bit. The bigger group pulled away and our group formed a nice pace line.

Wendell-Warwick ride Mother's Day 2008
Ride Reports

Today was Mother’s day and I spent the morning at my sister’s house with my mom and most of our family. After a nice brunch MaryEllen and I headed off to do the road ride. I arrived at the shop and got ready to do the ride. MaryEllen did the Sunderland Sweep ride with Paul Billings, Deb Kolpa, Bob Shepherd, and Frank. I on the other hand planned the Wendell-Warwick ride (what was I thinking?). I have to make note of the fact that I am not in very good shape fitness wise for a whole lot of reasons, none of which are relevant because I have to do what I have to do. I wish that it wasn’t so but it is and I will make the best of what fitness I have. I have learned one lesson after nearly 30 years of training and that lesson is: Be patient!! I will work hard at getting my fitness back but I know that it takes time and discipline. I will not go with the faster group just because I usually can, but rather I will ride to my current level and eventually I will get my game back. I have to keep reminding myself that today is the reality that I need to work with, not what I was last month, last year or ten years ago. I will never give up trying!!

The Guilford Ride (Cursed Ride) 5-8
Ride Reports

bicycle bob.jpgIt was warm and windy day today and I was busy with last minute bike adjustments for several of the riders. I got my bike ready and was heading for the parking lot when I saw the group that I was intending on riding with head out of the parking lot without me. I have not been up to my usual fitness level because of all the renovations to the shop and the spring spike in the workload, so I was looking forward to riding with a group that was more my speed. The route tonight was one of my favorites; The Cursed Ride to Guilford Vermont.

Bug Bob-sm.jpg May Day, was to become Mayday, Mayday for Bob; read on!!

Ok, so I’m starting to sound like an old record, but I have been putting in some long hours at the shop and I am not riding at my best. After I get through a busy day I just do not have the gas to hammer like I used to, so with that in mind I set out to do the ride to MT. Warner. It was a cool and windy day with partly cloudy skies when we left the shop at 6:00. There were 24 riders behind me as I led the group down High Street to Hope Street.
