Wednesday night in Wendell 4/29 PDF Print E-mail

After the heat wave of the past few days, it was refreshing to have temperatures in the mid 60s as I pulled into the ranger station at WSF for the second time of the day.  Liam and I had spent the early part of the day preparing some trails for tonight’s ride.

Road Ride to Wendell 4-27 PDF Print E-mail

It was the hottest day of the year and the ride today was headed for the hills of Wendell. I had planned on taking it easy on this ride so I was not overly worried about overheating but just in case I took along a third waterbottle. I led the group of 20 riders out of the parking lot and then over to Turners Falls where I began the climb up the Seventh Street hill. At the top of the L Street Hill I pulled off the front of the line and went to the back of the pack gasping for air as I did.

The "Kill Patrick" Road Ride 4-26 PDF Print E-mail

It was a very warm day on Monday and we had a good sized group of riders show up for our “beginner” ride. Joining me was Debbie M, Deb Kolpa, Kate W., Ann Pratt, Bad Bob, Paul B., Kathy, Mally-O, Todd S., and Patrick. Originally I was planning on going north but the group wanted to do a south route so that we would have a tailwind for the return trip. I agreed and we headed out of the parking lot and rode over to the bike trail in Turners Falls.

Wendell with the Batcheloffmans PDF Print E-mail

RacinJ.jpgI met Pete, Heather and Scott(he's been a ghost but is trying to get back on the bike) at Wendell today for a hot April ride. After warming up with my traditional climb up Wendell Rd, we shot down to the pond and then up the Lower Lookout Trail. The trail is riding pretty dry for the most part and we made quick work of it. From there we headed down Jerusalem Rd to the newly established and named, Thirteen Dollars. This trail starts as a walk in and skirts some cool climbing cliffs and then shoots down and then back up to the eastern most peak that is visible heading up my road. From the top, where there is a great vista, it descends smoothly and rapidly to the bottom of the section of the M&M trail that drops out of Ruggles Pond parking area. Somewhere at the beginning of Thirteen Dollars, Scott did something to his arm which made riding his singlespeed Giant XTC impossible. So Pete switched bikes with him and gave him gears. Scott dumped to the fireroad at the bottom of the M&M and Pete, Heather and I climbed the M&M back to Ruggles. Pete, riding not his singlespeed, with Eggbeater cleats and Time pedals, cleaned the climb, with I think only 1 dab and a dismount where the trail crosses the brook and is in need of a bridge. Had I been close enough to witness this feat, I'm sure I would be even more impressed. At the parking lot, Scott and Pete switched bikes and Scott headed home. The Batcheloffmans and myself hit the Maple Leaf, Wickett Pond Escape, Hiatus, Carlton Dirth and Old XC on the return. I got pretty dropped by the end of the Old XC which I largely blame on Gavin's recent sleep deprivation exercise that he's been conducting this week. All in all, two hours of good riding, great weather and fresh tracks on a new trail.

“While natural ability and physical strengths are given at birth; skills are obtained through training and experience.” This Bobism had a special meaning after Thursday nights ride. I would ask that all of our regular riders, and especially the newer riders, take some time to read the “Ride Levels” section at the top of the homepage. It is important that everyone understand what “expert” means before you decide which group to go with. I do try to help riders select the appropriate group before the ride leaves, but sometimes this advice goes unheeded. OK, enough with the editorial, now the ride report!
