It was a bright sunny day when we headed out of the parking lot with 10 riders for a trip up to the Greenfield Ridge. I was a little apprehensive about my ability to keep the pace of the group since I have not been riding all that much lately, but I was willing to give it a go anyway. Joining me for the ride tonight were Matt Ballard, Ed Hoffmeister, Knoepfchen, Behn, Jamal, Green’s Hammerhead and Matt, Todd (on his 29’er single speed), Mitch, Seth (from VO-Max), and Kyle Bradford.

We headed over to the trails and began the long climb up the hill on the Chimney Trail. I did not make either of the two steep pitches and ended up walking up the hills with several others. Once everyone got to the Blue Dot Trail Hammerhead and Matt led the group up the trail. I made it up the next two climbs and followed Mitch to the end of the trail where the group was waiting. When everyone was ready we headed for the steep descent on the Yellow Dot Trail. I followed Jamal and Todd down the switchback turns to the White Dot Trail where I watched Jamal do a spectacular endo on the last corner. Poor ole Jamal went flying over the handlebars and into the woods. At first I thought “rut row” this is not going to be good, but seconds after landing in the brush, Jamal jumped up and said “I’m good!!”  and so I rode on past him as he collected his gear and got back on the bike. I rode solo all the way to the end of the trial where Hammerhead was waiting at an intersection to ensue everyone went the correct way. Once the group was all together we headed across the road to continue on the Blue Dot Trail. This is a pretty rocky and hilly trail and many of the riders had to dismount on the climbs. I managed to ride the entire trail without dabbing or stopping and arrive at the turn about in the middle of the pack. After a few minutes wait poor old Seth came slogging along. He had an older rigid bike that was pretty heavy and he was suffering on the hills. When everyone was ready to go we headed down the hill for Bears Den Road. I ended up at the front of the group with Matt and Hammerhead and I told them that I was taking Curt’s Shortcut to the power lines. Matt and his group decided that they would do the steep climb up the power line trail and then tackle Joe’s Rock. I opted (along with four or five others) to skip the climb and head straight over to Five Points. It was a beautiful night to be in the wood and none of us minded waiting up for the group to do the longer loop. When Matt G. finally made it down the trail (he missed the turn and was the last rider over Joe’s Rock) we all headed for the Green Dot Trail. The group was all together in a long line as we pedaled past MPM’s house and headed up the hill to Bears Den Road. I had to stop at the log crossing about half way up the hill as I was now getting pretty tired. After crossing the log I did manage to ride the rest of the way up the hill to re-join the group at the road. We headed down the hill to the second left turn onto the Yellow Dot Trail and I began the climb up the hill to the Red Dot Trail. I did not make it up the last steep section of the hill even though the group was cheering me on. Once we were all together we headed down the Red Dot Trail and over to the parking area at the gate to Poet’s Seat Tower. At this point Seth was all done so we directed him back to the shop via the tar roads. The rest of us headed out down the Red Dot Trail. Mitch and I somehow ended up in front of Knoepfchen and I she complained that she was being held back by “old men” blocking the trail. Well that lit a fire under the two grandmasters and we soon put some distance between us and the fretting Fräulein. Mitch and I rode the rest of the way down the Red Dot Trail and met up with the group at the intersection with the White Dot Trail. After the rest of the group arrived (including the aforementioned Fräulein) we headed down the chimney trail to High Street and back to the shop. I was generally pleased that I was able to do this ride with the group and I think that everyone had a good ride.

Missed a few
We also had Dave on the Specialized and one other I didn't remember the name of, on an elderly Klein.

Was a good ride, but the Greenfield Ridge is just a squidge too little mileage to be a great ride. Sure we could have looped out to Canada Hill, and probably should have, but it still would have been a lot shorter than the other venues we frequent.

There is something to be said about convenience to the shop though...

Well,

It's short, but fairly intense especially if you keep moving...and it has the most draining opening trail of any ride in the Bob menu.

Another way to stretch out the ride a bit is to not run the White Trail out to the parking lot (from the tower), but instead run the White Trail all the way to the red/ blue trail junction (i.e, in the other direction). Then run the red trail over and UP to the parking lot (several little trail to take up here btw).

Also, we never climb up to the Sachem Head platform anymore...yeah, it's a bike on shoulder grunt, but it changes the flow of the ride and serves up pleasant views from a cool spot...the Ride back on the Blue trail is a REAL Technical tester (and riding the whole rocky blue trail in both directions is a great ride).

And, Canada Hill/ coke plant can be added for real leg stretching.

Anyway-just some suggestions to stretch out on the ridge, sounds like it was a good ride.
