Is it December? 60 degrees in Wendell December 3 PDF Print E-mail

Today I persuaded Bob to post a ride for Wendell.  The weather folk were talking rain most of the day, but as is often the case, they were wrong by 5 or 6 hours.  65 degree temps were the rule most of the day, and it was still reading 62 in the car as I pulled into the lot a little before 6:00 Along for the ride tonight were Mark, Mitch, Matt and Me - the M&M ride squared!  We opted for some directional variance from the norm this evening beginning with an excursion up the Trail to the Lookouts.  We hadn't gotten very far when I heard first some crunching from Mitch's drive train, and then a string of explatives followed by him saying "I'm done, my derailleur hanger just broke".  Quickly Mark and I stopped him from turning around as both of us thought we might have a Hizzy Hanger.  Mark was right, and/or mine is burried too deeply to be found.  Either way, we got Mitch rolling again in less than 5 minutes and proceeded out to Jerusalem Rd.

At Jerusalem, we took the left then immediate right and continued up to the Lookout Trail and onto Moose Trax.  The trails have remained mostly leaf free since our event a month ago, but there was a lot of standing water everywhere.  Places I have never seen water, including the top of Moose Trax, were nearly 2 inches deep on the trail tread.  A lot of that is probably due to the leaf dams created by blowing and raking, but I'm sure it will only serve to harden the tread since there hasn't been much traffic to speak of.

Once we regrouped at Damon Camp Rd, we headed out to Whales Head to ride the Hannah uphill from that point.  Matt, showing his lack of either fear or reason, rode down the steep pitch from Whales Head to Hannah while the more mature and reasonable followers hiked down to the trail.  He said it wasn't too bad, pretty smooth!  I don't believe it!

Hannah rode pretty well as the Moon began peeking through the treees added an early light quality to the evening.  It is truly a bizarre combination 60 degrees, near full moonlight, and continual flurries.  As we gathered at the top of Baker Rd, we discussed options for the continuation of the ride.  Concensus led to us taking Bob is Fat, to Wickett Pond Rd (avoiding the swamps of the Maple Leaf), to Nipmuck; which was a real joy, fast, clear and way fun.  From the bottom of Nipmuck, we turned right and climbed up Saxon Bridge Rd.  I try to get that climb in at least once a season, and  hadn't done it since mid-winter.  It really is a nice alternative to Baker with one loose steep that is a real challenge.

From the top, we headed for the Escape, Hiatus, Carlton Dirth, the M&M and concluding with the XC Trail.

By the time we reassembled at the lot, we were physically spent, but overjoyed by the superb combination of conditions and company.

Too bad more of you didn't join us.
