Bob-MTB.jpgAfter the beating I took last night I was pretty sure that I was not going to be leading the charge for tonight’s MTB ride in Vernon Vermont. At 6:15 I arrived at Todd Amoto’s house and got my bike ready and waited for the rest of the riders to arrive. Joining me for the ride tonight was Curt, Adam, Mark Newton, Todd, Eric Potter, Matt Sullivan, and two of Eric’s friends whose names I forgot. We headed out of Todd’s Driveway and by the time we got 500 yards down Pond Road I was 500 yards behind Mark and Todd.

I was looking for a nice easy pace for myself and although the two riders in the lead were not necessarily hammering; they did put me in a spot of bother trying to keep pace with them. I rode along with Curt and Eric to Scott Road and then Eric headed up the hill to join the rest of the group. Curt and I settled into a nice pace and when we got to the top of the first climb we came upon Mark, who had ridden back to see how we were doing. Mark rode with Curt and me to where the group was waiting for us and at this point I told Todd that I was not going to be going with the group to do the next trail. I have done this ride before and I knew that the trail has a very big climb, which I knew was going to be more of a chore than I was willing to undertake. I asked Todd to give me the route directions so that I could meet the group out on course. My plan was to stay on the somewhat flatter road and then meet the group at Satan’s Kingdom main gate. As I was telling Todd of my plan Curt said that he would join me. So, Todd led the boys down the road with Curt and me following them. We rode at a nice easy pace and soon we were at the driveway gate at the trailhead where the group would begin the trip back to Todd’s house. We waited for a while and then took a ride down the road to see if the group was coming along. After returning to the trailhead again, Curt rode up the trail to see if the group had changed course and was heading up from that direction. Well, they weren’t, so we decided to head over to Satan’s Kingdom and see if they were there waiting for us. They weren’t…..so Curt headed into the woods to see if he could find the riders out on the trail. He didn’t….and soon was back out on the road. Now at this point I had been making a rather generous blood donation to the mosquito population in the area and I was ready to head back to Todd’s house. Curt suggested that we should head back on the trails and see if we could intercept the riders out on course. I agreed and we rode down the trail. I kinda knew the trails but had never been down them in this direction so when we got to the first turn and there were five choices, I was stumped. I chose a trail that looked like it would head us in the right direction and off we went. I chose poorly. After a while we ended up out in a large field which led to a trailhead that we both knew was on course. Problem was that we could see from the tire tracks in the dirt that the group had already been there. Well at this point we decided to just continue on and head back towards Todd’s house. We rode down the trail that the group had ridden on and eventually we popped out of the woods at Mooseboy’s house. I told Curt that I knew that there was a trail off to the left of Mooseboy’s house but I wasn’t too sure if I could find it. So I suggested that we just continue down the road to 142 and head back to Todd’s house. But no……Curt wanted to continue on the trails so we rode back up West Road to the trail and headed in the direction of Pond Road. We did not get far before the trail turned into a bushwhacking path that was difficult to follow. We eventually came out of the woods onto a farm and then rode out of the driveway onto 142. At this point it was getting dark so we rode on the highway back to Todd’s house. When we arrived back at the house the rest of the group had come and gone out on another loop. I was however done for the day and so Curt and I put our bikes away and got on with getting the BBQ going. Pretty soon the boys came back (some in better condition than others) and the feast was on. Deena and her son Nathan arrived to join Melissa and Pam’s kids for play time while the rest of us hung out and waited for the burgers to get cooked. We had a nice party around the swimming pool and most of us headed for home around 9:30 (Matt and his daughter went in swimming as we all were leaving). It was a great ride and I think everyone had a good time.
