It was Deena Potter’s birthday today and tonight’s ride was
dubbed Deena Potter Night. So, to help her celebrate the momentous occasion (her 24th), we had
a large group of riders accompany the dear girl on a bike ride down the valley.
The group included the Martha “Mastiff” Missale, Alyssa “Bulldog” Blum, Audrey “Airedale:
Garfield, (AKA the Vernon Vixen’s) the birthday girl herself: Deena “Pitbull”
Potter, Roger, Frank, John, Todd Amato, Marcus Curran, Steve McCormick, Bonnie,
Bad Bob, John S., Kelly S., Patrick and myself as ringmaster of the rolling circus.

A Very Warm Run to MT. Warner |

It was another brutally hot and humid day today, not quite
the 100 degree scorcher of Tuesday, but more humid. I had planned to do the MT.
Warner ride tonight but I had some concerns about how well I would do in the
heat after Tuesday’s ride where I felt a little heat stress I planned well for
this ride by hydrating and eating well in advance of the start of the trip. I
also packed two Shotbloks packages and a water bottle in my jersey pocket as
well as two water bottles on the bike so that I would be well fed and watered
for the ride. The other concern I had is the fact that I have not been riding
well going uphill this season and although the route was not particularly
hilly, I was wary of even the small hills.

It was as hot as it gets here in the valley today. With
temps hovering around the 100 degree mark I thoughtfully had planned a nice
ride down the valley and up the hill into Conway. Thinking that staying near
the river and then heading up the west side of the valley as the sun was
setting I would avoid the heat of the day, I set the 38 mile course for the
riders. I had been busy all day in the somewhat air conditioned shop so it was
quite a shock when I got out to the parking lot and felt the full brunt of the
heat and humidity.

Today was another beautiful day here in Happy Valley. The
weather continues to be perfect by just about anyone’s definition of the term.
The ride was our famous Tri-State loop and with sunny skies, cool temperatures
and a slight breeze a group of 20 riders left the shop at 6:00 to head over to
Bernardston Road. I kept a pretty reasonable pace over to the hill and began
the climb at 15 mph. I stayed near the front of the group to keep the pace at
14 mph and we all crested the hill together (Steve Toplitz was off the front a
bit).

Third time is the charm! We finally were able to get the
Warwick-Wendell ride off on a perfect summer’s evening. We had a group of 29
riders for the trip and we were actually able to get going on time. I had asked
Mark Newton to lead the group up the hill on Bernardston Road so that I could
spend more time in the middle of the pack and not get tired out on the first
hill.
