After years of hearing about how great (difficult? painful?) the D2R2 ride was, I decided to sign up this year. One of my main reasons was that I figured it would motivate me to get more miles in this Summer so I'd be ready for the ride.
Even so, I had no interest in doing the 180K. I think I'd stop having fun long before the 100 mile mark, so signed up for the 100K (62 mile) ride. I was still a bit concerned with the 62 miles for that ride, since I knew it could end up being 6 or more hours on the bike.
The weekend before the ride, I did the length of the state ride in VT (200 miles in 2 days) so I knew that I should be all set as far as fitness goes. I took it fairly easy on the few rides I did in the last week before the event.
Another good reason for not doing the 180K was the start time. There is no way that I would be ready to ride (much less AWAKE) at the 6:00AM start time for that ride. 9:00 was much more reasonable though it still meant getting up at 7:00... a few hours earlier than I was used to on the weekend.

Ok, so after a hard ride on Tuesday and a somewhat easy MTB
ride on Wednesday I thought that I was going to have another hard ride down to
NoHo tonight. As the day was winding down and I was getting ready to ride, Neil
Quinn came into the shop. He bought some tires for his bike and then decided to
join us for the ride.

Today is the beginning of our shorter rides for this season.
With the daylight diminishing rapidly we will have to limit our trips to 40
miles or less from now to the end of the season. The route tonight is our
favorite “Cursed Ride” which is a loop up through Northfield to Tyler Hill in
Vernon Vermont and then a return via Guilford and Leyden. I have done this ride
so many times that I know every inch of the road and I can always use that
knowledge to keep myself in the game by timing when to push and when to
conserve energy.

What a difference a day makes!!! Today it was a beautiful
clear and dry day with little wind, a vast departure to Tuesday’s heat and
humidity. Our route was a loop up north and then a ride to Amherst and back
through Deerfield. I led a group of 18 riders out of the parking lot and over
to Bernardston Road to begin the climb up the hill. About half way up I pulled
off the paceline at 15 mph and Mark Newton took over. Doug Dale had offered to
ride at a speed that would keep the group together for the entire trip and
although I appreciated the offer I was a little unsure if he could keep the
younger crowd corralled for 48 miles.
